EKK DEEWANA THA is Hindi version of YE MAAYA CHESAVE (Telgu) and VINNAITHAANDI VARUVAAYAA (Tamil) with it Gautham Menon returns to Bollywood after Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, both of its tamil and telgu versions are superhits. Menon is a master storyteller but fails in Ekk Deewana Tha, it leaves no impact on the audience. A story too stretched after a certain point, when the story should conclude Menon takes us in a time travel and starts a never love-story… anyways the story goes like this.

Sachin [Prateik] is from a middle class family and is an engineering graduate lives in Mumbai, who is in love with the world of cinema. One day, he sees Jessie [Amy Jackson] and falls in love at first sight. Jessie is beautiful, elegant, smart and classy but Jessie belongs to an orthodox Malayali Christian family where watching movies or falling in love are completely taboo.

Sachin finds himself increasingly attracted to her. Jessie, on her part, tries to forge a friendship between them, believing that cloaking their feelings under this umbrella of friendship would save them heartache, tears and a full-blown family drama. But these two different characters go through the pangs and pleasure of first love, while battling for the situations that life has placed them in.

After DHOBI GHAT, wherein Prateik’s efforts were appreciated, now EKK DEEWANA THA makes you wake up to the potential the talented youngster possesses, it requires tremendous self-assurance and acting prowess to enact this intricate and demanding character in an authoritative style. His dialogue delivery is good and body language, precise.

Amy Jackson is charming. She carries off her part with the Indian attire-splendidly. Though the character is not very compelling — since she appears confused about her emotions for the Prateik, it must be said that you don’t detect slip-ups in her presentation of the character. In fact, it isn’t a straight-forward role for a newcomer, but Amy handles it like a pro. However, her makeup varies from scene-to-scene, there is no consistency.

What bores the viewer is the character of Jessie while the guy is crazily in love with her, the girl, in contrast, seems very confused about her feelings for the guy. She appears indecisive about what she really yearns for and this aspect, to put it bluntly, sends out puzzling signals not only to the lover boy, but to the by-now-exhausted viewer as well.

The screenplay totters and flounders the moment Jessie decides to part ways, justification offered is least persuasive. Since the reason for separation is not forceful enough, it leaves the viewer feeling unsympathetic, not satisfied, detached and disconnected from the goings-on subsequently. The sequence at the Taj Mahal and the portions thereafter don’t work either for EKK DEEWANA THA.

I give this movie two cheers.

This Valentine Weekend have some “krghhh” factor with Dharma Production’s new venture EK MAIN AUR EKK TU, a rom-com starring Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan. The movie portrays story about two totally different people Rahul (Imran Khan) and Riana (Kareena Kapoor), it reminds of the famous rom-com WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS and the Mexican film RECIEN CAZADO, but EK MAIN AUR EKK TU is no adaptation of any of these movies.

Debutant director Shakun Batra brings with him a novel grammar of storytelling, it doesn’t rely on buffers like heavy-duty drama, earsplitting background score or props to augment a scene or move the narrative frontward. So, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU doesn’t take the conventional route.

The story goes like this Rahul [Imran Khan] is on his way to become a carbon-copy of his parents [Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah], when he suddenly loses his job in Vegas. Afraid that he has let his parents down,he decides to hide the truth and find another job. When by a twist of fate, he meets Riana [Kareena Kapoor], a quick-witted hairstylist, who is everything that he is not.

A series of events lead them to meet on Christmas Eve after a few drinks, but as usual, it’s never a ‘few’. Following this night of debauchery, they wake up to discover that they’ve got married. Now, Rahul has more than just his job to hide from his parents but his marriage also. They both decide to sort it out as soon as possible and get an appointment from the court in ten days. Over the next ten days they share arguments, moments and laughs that results in an unlikely friendship. The question is do they fall in love?? or continue to be friends.

The story is set in an urban landscape [Las Vegas, Mumbai], EK MAIN AUR EKK TU is essentially a two-seater vehicle that excuses itself from the banal and hackneyed prescription, it endorses the longstanding theme of opposites attract. Shakun Batra has targeted more towards the multiplex friendly technique of narrating a story and the execution of the subject reminds us the way rom-coms are narrated in the Hollywood.

Imran Khan fits into the role of a stickler for precision smoothly. In fact it was expected that Imran to be overshadowed by Kareena completely, as she is a far more experienced actor and also because her character is feisty and livewire, but Imran manages to deliver a delightful performance yet again.

The supporting cast comes up with impeccable performances, Boman Irani excels yet again. Ratna Pathak Shah is remarkable as Imran’s mother. Ram Kapoor is fantastic. Sonia Mehra is feisty in the cameo.

EK MAIN AUR EKK TU is a slick, breezy and pleasant it should click with its target audience — the youth. This take on love is fresh, refined, smart, lively and thoroughly pleasing thanks to its characters, conversations and the inherent humor. A perfect Valentine date movie. A film stuffed with beautiful-fun moments that are sure to bring a wide smile on your face. So go for it!

I give 3 cheers to this Valentine rom-com.

The Copy Cats – Top 10 Hollywood Rip-Offs in Bollywood

1. The Italian Job – Players

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/the-italian-job-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="The Italian Job Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

From its very original version released in 1969, with its very classic cast of Michael Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill to the much later 2003 version with Donald Sutherland, Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and other stalwarts, the Italian Job has been entertaining its viewers as amongst Hollywood’s most edged thriller films which involve a simple plot of stealing gold worth $35 million from the canals of Venice to LA. The transfer of gold is supposed to take place over a high Alpine pass that hasn’t been disturbed since the time of Hannibal and the fact that it all gets messed up due to human error, greed and modern technology only makes humans to turn out more puny than they seem. Natural laws are after all always supreme and should not be challenged. But ah! for human greed. our desi Players, a supposedly Indian vision of the Italian Job?starring Abhisheik Bachchan, Bipasa Basu,Sonam Kapoor,Neil Nitin Mukesh,Bobby Deol …a huge star cast and heavy budget couldn’t stand to the expectation of the classic due to its poor screenplay, the stealing of gold became a piece of cake for our desi players.

2. Three Men and a Baby – Heyy Baby

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/the-men_and-a-baby-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Three Men and a Baby Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

Do you remember the lovely comedy starring Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson? Yes, we’re talking about Three Men and a Baby. That story switched shores and got turned into a mad comedy directed by Sajid Khan that would bore anyone with taste – Heyy Babyy. Starring Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan and Riteish Deshmukh, the film had some relief in terms of decent music . This desi attempt, however, is no classic like the original one. Its seriously a shocking remake of a beautiful comedy Three Men and a Baby.

3. Bruce Almighty – God Tussi Great Ho!

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/bruce-almighty-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Bruce Almighty Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

Salman Khan in Jim Carrey shoes! Are you Serious? Directed by Tom Shadyac, the 2003 movie Bruce Almighty was a through and through Jim Carrey movie. The actor took the whole movie on his shoulder ,with his typical charisma and the audience did not care much about the patchy screenplay, and the movie ended up being a mammoth success in the box office. But when deciding to remake such a movie, the producers gave writing and directing to Rumi Jaffery.. Why?and roped in Salman Khan to play the lead. The movie released with some sleezy songs and of course a poor screenplay. The movie goers made the best choice and stayed away from the screens for this one.

4. Old Boy – Zinda

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/oldboy-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Old Boy Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

[dcs_image align="right" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/zinda-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Zinda Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs" /]

The 2003 South Korean movie Old Boy was noted for its bold script, unconventional plot, stylized fight sequences, great performances and sharp direction. Kudos to Sanjay Gupta for looking past Hollywood and a little eastward, so came up Zinda .There was a complete lack of chemistry between the Sanjay Dutt and Lara Dutta. Both Mahesh Manjarekar and John Abhram were completely misplaced. The movie looked slick. The director and screen writer Sanjay Gupta lost his control over the movie at the stage of screenwriting itself and never got that control back.

5. The Usual Suspects – Chocolate: The Deep Dark Secrets

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/the-ususal-suspects-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="The Usual Suspects Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

[dcs_image align="right" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/chocolate-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Chocolate: The Deep Dark Secrets Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs" /]

The Usual Suspects, directed by Bryan Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie , is a 1995 crime thriller from Hollywood. A movie that won the Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor awards in the 68th Academy Awards. A remake of such a movie like this should never be attempted unless you are sure you are in the same league of McQuarrie and Singer, which Vivek Agnihotri is clearly not. With talented actors like Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, and Irrfan Khan, it was a giant waste of their talent. The remake was a complete headache.

6. Phone Booth – Knock Out

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/phone-booth-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Phone Booth Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

[dcs_image align="right" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/knockout-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Knock Out Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs" /]

This 2010 movie was a rip-off of the 2003 Hollywood blockbuster Phone Booth. It was a psychological thriller that stood completely on the script of Larry Cohen, direction of Joel Schumacher, and on the performance of Colin Farrell. But when it was remade, it was turned into a pathetic political thriller.Sanjay Dutt and Irrfan Khan portrayed the characters done by Colin Farrell and Kiefer Sutherland in the original. The only good part is that 20th Century Fox, the makers of the original, sued the producers of Knock Out and an Indian court admitted that Bollywood infringed a Hollywood copyright.

7. Derailed – Train

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/derailed-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Derailed Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

[dcs_image align="right" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/the-train-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="The Train Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs" /]

Train is story between three individuals and thus forming a poisonous triangle starring Emraan Hashmi, Geeta Basra and Sayali Bhagat, this movie is a remake of remake. Its taken from Kollywood film Pachaikili Muthucharam which is is again remake of Derailed starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston, doesn’t make it any less of a copy.

8. What Lies Beneath – Raaz

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/what-lies-beneath-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="What Lies Beneath Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

[dcs_image align="right" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/raaz-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Raaz Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs" /]

The horror film directed by Vikram Bhatt is said to be an unofficial remake of the Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer starrer What Lies Beneath. But in his attempt use his ‘inspiration’, Bhatt tweaked the story starring Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea and by doing so, the film lost its charm.

9. My Sassy Girl – Ugly Aur Pagli

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/my-sassy-girl-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="My Sassy Girl Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

[dcs_image align="right" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/ugly-aur-pagli-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Ugly Aur Pagli Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs" /]

This 2008 Hindi movie directed by Sachin Khot and produced by Pritish Nandy, is a complete rip-off of the 2001 Korean movie My Sassy Girl. The lead roles that were immortalized by Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun in the original were portrayed by Ranvir Shorey and Mallika Sherawat in this horrible unofficial remake. The movie was mediocre in all departments including acting, directing, and rewriting, even when not compared to the original. The worst part was Mallika Sherawat and her atrocities in the name of acting.

10. Reservoir Dogs – Kaante

[dcs_image align="left" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/reservoir-dogs-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Reservoir Dogsl Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs"/]

[dcs_image align="right" src="/wp-content/gallery/ripoffs-movie-poster-gallery/kaante-movie-poster.jpg" w="305" h="500" desc="Kaante Movie Poster"  group="ripoffs" /]

Sanjay Gupta, the master thief of plot lines from Hollywood, gave us cocktail of classic gangster films in one movie – Kaante, his worst ever. Starring big names like Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Malaika Arora and several others, a huge starcast couldn’t hide the fact that the plot line was a patchwork quilt of three stellar films – Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects, and Heat. That’s quite heavy.

Whenever a cult is remade, the question arises a work which is so perfect should be remade? Why to restructure it again? So a cult should be remade only when a contemporary approach can be given and if there is an enthusiastic audience is there to watch it again. Its very necessary that the makers don’t mishmash with the subject of the movie. There will be a meticulous evaluation and comparisons as remakes come with the baggage of matching standards and aesthetics of the original. The remake should be a work of tribute to the masterwork.

Hrithik Roshan in Agneepath

Agneepath, this time is electrifing with its new avatar of characters, a new Vijay Dinanath Chauhan fights the much evil Kancha Cheena. A revenge story with hard hitting and gritty action sequences which makes the movie more volatile and explosive.

So its now Hrithik Roshan’s turn to wear the mask of the iconic Vijay Dinanath Chauhan portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan. The original wasn’t a hit but it fetched Big B the National Award in the category of the Best Actor. But this time the iconic character is brought back by first-time director Karan Malhotra with Karan Johar’s Dharam Productions, the original movie was produced by Yash Johar and directed by Mukul S. Anand.

The story goes like this in a small village called Mandwa, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan [Hrithik Roshan] is taught by his principled father [Chetan Pandit] about the path of fire — Agneepath. His life gets completely shattered when the evil drug dealer Kancha [Sanjay Dutt] hangs his father to death. Vijay leaves for Mumbai with his pregnant mother [Zarina Wahab] and has only one mission in life — to come back to Mandwa one day and bring back the glory of his father’s name.

In Mumbai, the 12-yr-old Vijay is taken under the wings of the city gang star Rauf Lala [Rishi Kapoor]. From then on it is a journey of revenge where he makes and breaks many relationships, only to get closer to his aim, revenge from Kancha. Vijay finds support only in his best friend Kaali [Priyanka Chopra], who stands by him at every moment of his life. Fifteen years later, his hatred for Kancha brings him back to Mandwa where life comes full circle.

A revenge story needs to be spiced with several terrific dramatic moments and Malhotra did that well. His handling of the subject deserves brownie points. The only ‘hurdle’, if one may say so, is the romantic track towards the first hour, which is lackluster and goes little offbeat.

Debutant director Karan Malhotra brings from the original movie, but bestows the new version with a freshness [screenplay adapted by Ila Bedi Datta and Karan Malhotra]. Krishnan Iyer M.A. [portrayed by Mithun Chakraborty in the original] is done away with this time, while Malhotra introduces another negative character called Rauf Lala [Rishi Kapoor] to make the proceedings more volatile and explosive.

Watch Theatrical Trailer of Agneepath here

The assessment of the movie would appear fragmentary if one disregards the colossal contribution by action director Abbas Ali Moghul. Raw and gritty are two expressions that best illustrate the action scenes in explosive AGNEEPATH. Kancha is larger than life, hardhearted, evil and stronger than the protagonist, so when good eventually triumphs, the heroism ought to come to the forefront and it does so forcefully, convincingly and copiously. The action scenes are sure to draw whistles and claps, especially the one in the climax.

One may wonder is the about the new avatar of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, the interesting thing is the fact that instead of copying the Big B’s Vijay, Hrithik had his own style and version of the character. His performace is magnificent. In a action film logically where there is war between bad and good, the leading lady Priyanka Chopra doesn’t have much to do still she plays a character which is significant and is played beautifully by her. Sanjay Dutt is electrifying as the hardhearted, brutal, evil Kancha and his sinful getup only augments the impact of his performance. The menacing getup adds abundantly to the evil/stony character and his performance is ultimate in 30 minutes, when Kancha confronts Vijay, which is the hallmark of the movie. Rishi kapoor, his performance is going to shock a lot of people who are familiar with his wide-ranging body of work. He’s exceptional as Rauf Lala, enacting the bad guy with fervor and passion. Katrina Kaif is sensuous in the item song Chikni Chameli with her dance movements.

The songs, composed by Ajay-Atul, may not be chartbusters except for Chikni Chameli which is already a rage, but the compositions are in sync with the texture of the film. The background score, also by Ajay-Atul, is electrifying and exhilarating .

Agneepath is remade but with new freshness, having a great performances from the actors. A new Vijay Dinanath Chauhan fights much evil Kancha…

I give four cheers to this new and electrifying AGNEEPATH.
